The day-to-day

Landscape with clouds. iPhone 17Pro. Main 24mm camera. Festival Gardens, Liverpool. I decided to delete my recent post about the 'Absence Project' because I felt the Blogger platform was not the best place for long-form explanations on what is now an ongoing project. I have transferred a longer and more detailed version to Substack (not yet published). I feel this platform is far better suited to my more day-to-day photography. When I'm ready to publish on Substack I will put up a link here and on Bluesky for anyone who may be interested.

Southport Flower Show and the iPhone 17pro.

Superb floral display in the ‘Floral Art’ tent. I knew the day would be busy and crowded and I would have little time for any meaningful photography as we were also meeting with friends. I have recently bought an iPhone, the 17 Pro . My poor old SE was beyond help. This was the perfect time to try it out and leave my cameras at home. The weather was kind, and the sun had come out, but the show was packed with people as expected. Photo opportunities would be scarce, and we were really there to meet our friends, not for me to take photographs. The ‘Floral Art’ tent provided a good opportunity to test out the phone, and the displays were fabulous and very creative. I learned from reading up on-line that best practice is to toggle between zoom sizes rather than use the rather awkward screen control dial: .5, 1.2x, 2x, 4x, and 8x were optimised and good choices. This technique served me well as a total newcomer to this phone. I chose not to shoot RAW , as I was only testing both...

Zenit B: The Beauty and the Burden of a Soviet Workhorse

Zenit B with the Industar lens Zenit B is a 35mm single lens reflex camera made by Russian camera manufacturer Zenit . It was produced from 1968–1977, either with an M42 mount , or the M39 mount . Shutter speeds were B, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250 and 1/500. It is very similar to the Zenit-E , except it does not have a built in light-meter. There’s something deeply meditative about shooting with a Zenit B camera. Built like a tank in the Soviet Union during the 1960s and 70s, the Zenit B is an all-manual, no-frills 35mm SLR that forces you to slow down, think, and appreciate photography in its rawest form. The Difficulties Let’s not romanticise everything. The Zenit B can be a brutal teacher. It has no built-in light meter, so you’re either relying on external meters or learning the delicate dance of the “ Sunny 16 ” rule.
