A stills photographers personal experience Canon R100 alongside the iPhone 17 Pro which is attached to the Ulanzi phone grip I am primarily a still-image photographer. So this blog post will concentrate on the making of still photographic images using two devices, shooting in the same location using the same light and as near as possible, the same settings. I hope by working this way I can discover the strengths and the weaknesses of each device. I do not intend to write about the operating system of the phone or the video capabilities of either device. You will have to look elsewhere for that. But first a little background information on both devices. Old jetty at Liverpool waterfront near the Festival Gardens site. The Canon G7X, a 12 year old pocket powerhouse

Palm House, Sefton Park. Canon G7X monochrome setting. No post-processing. A recent Blog Post by Dave Whenham mentioned the small Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 and after reading Dave’s post I thought I would dig out my old Canon G7X and give it a little work out. I have been involved doing an analogue film-based project recently and I have been neglecting the digital side of my photography. I had also forgotten how small and versatile the G7X was. Launched in October 2014, the original Canon PowerShot G7 X retailed for £579 / $699.99. Because of the current viral demand for the G7 X line on social media platforms, its current used market value (£450 to £560), remarkably close to what it cost brand new over a decade ago. I purchased mine back in early 2015. I needed a lightweight, pocketable travel camera for a trip to Bilbao . The G7X proved to be the perfect choice. The original Canon PowerShot G7 X (Mark I) features a 20.2-megapixel 1-inch CMO...

Camera Wars: Nikon FE vs Canon AE-1 vs Zenit TTL. Part 2.

In my last post (8th January 24) I explained how I obtained three lovely vintage TTL metered film cameras and how I wanted to compare them. Here’s how it went… In the morning of the test shoot I loaded the three cameras with 35mm film, using Ilford HP5+. The Canon AE-1 and Nikon FE loaded smoothly and the Zenit TTL was a little more difficult, though nowhere near as tough as my wife’s Zenit B (which is notorious for ripping film sprockets ). Once all three were loaded up I made a self-portrait photograph in my studio mirror holding each camera in turn, partly as a test image but also so that I could identify which negatives belonged to which camera when they came back from the lab. Top: Canon AE-1, middle Nikon FE and bottom Zenit TTL I took all three cameras along to my local park for the tests. The winter weather was fair for the time of year, if a little on the dull and grey side but the light was flat and reasonably consistent. I took along my Leningrad light meter to test th...
